It's a beautiful display when everything is working right
This monitor is a mixed bag. It's the only UWQHD display on the market with G-sync and (sometimes) 100hz capability. It's a beautiful display when everything is working right. Unfortunately they seem to have horrendous QC issues. This was my 2nd X34 monitor and has been returned for exchange due to defects. My first was from another vendor and was also returned.
Here is my experience so far:
Both monitors had terrible coil whine, mostly when there is a lot of white displayed (like this website). It is definitely from the monitor itself and not the GPU. It is bad enough to be quite distracting from 4 feet away even over the normal PC noise.
Both monitors had moderate backlight bleed (mostly upper left corner) and IPS glow (mostly lower left corner)
One of the monitors would run stably at 100hz as advertised, the other could only do 95hz without going blank or flickering terribly
Both monitors exhibited "scanline" artifacts. One was barely visible except for in some nvidia g-sync demos at certain framerates. The other was easily visible from the desktop as soon as the "overclock" function (which allows >60hz) was enabled on the monitor.
One monitor had dead pixels, the other did not.
I would give 5 stars for the great features, but am removing 3 for the awful quality control. Judging from the Acer forums receiving multiple defective monitors is not an isolated incident. I am getting another replacement simply because it's the only monitor available with these features. If my 3rd monitor ends up being good I may revise the rating. If not I will probably wait until a competitor has something similar.
UPDATE:
I have now received my 3rd X34. This one is also defective. Bad coil whine on white backgrounds. Will only reach 95Hz. Scanline artifacts visible at desktop with overclock mode enabled, even at 60hz. Flickers when g-sync is in use. Also has worse backlight bleed than the first 2 monitors. At least this one doesn't have dead pixels. I don't know if I'm just extremely unlucky or if most people just don't notice or care about these problems. In any case I'm done playing the lottery. Adjusting rating to 1 star.
