Doesn't even get the basics right
I haven't read it all yet, so take that into account, but so far the book shows a remarkable lack of knowledge about Thiel and his views. I've read Zero to One twice and I've actually interviewed Thiel twice. For example, Chafkin attributes Silicon Valley's "disruption culture" to Thiel, but Thiel takes the opposite POV decrying disruption as a goal. That's Thiel 101, a course which the author appears to have flunked. Another fumble is to attribute to Thiel that idea that entrepreneurship is about self-mastery, when his view is that it is about solving problems through innovation. When it comes to understanding Thiel, Chafkin pretty well ignores the huge influence of his mentor, Rene Girard, which tells us that the point is to attack, and not to understand his subject. What a missed opportunity.
