Honest review. If you love your pet please read.
First off please let me preface this review by telling you that we have a light colored Golden retriever. She has almost clear toenails so I can see exactly how much toenail I can cut before cutting into the quick. That said the first thing I did was check to see if the nail guide was a good thing or not. NO, don't use it ! Had I done so I would have hurt our dog. I did some test cuts on a heavy zip-tie and with the nail guide I would have cut over 1/8th inch of toenail. Next issue was the cutting edge. These cutters were ground with a very course grit wheel and the edge was not sharp enough to make a clean cut in the zip-tie let alone a dogs toenail. Last issue is the latch that holds the cutters closed when not in use. After reading the 1 star reviews of this item and the concerns of others having this latch closing while cutting there pets nails I did some testing. Yes, it will lock up the cutter part way through the cut due to the fact that it is attached with a small screw threaded into the soft plastic handle material. The fix to these issues are simple. Take the cutter apart, remove the nail guide and latch that holds them closed. Sharpen the cutting edge with a 1/2 inch round fine grit round hone stone and if you are concerned about keeping them closed while not in use a rubber band will work. Lastly; if you look close at most of this style cutters for sale you will notice that they are all the same other than maybe the brand, handle color, seller, and price. They do work well now that these issues have been addressed and with care should last many years. I hope this review helps other pet owners and I encourage everyone to please review items they buy honestly and fairly to avoid hurting our pets, ourselves, and our pocket books.
