Does not heat to 425 degrees
I was excited to finally upgrade my old (original from years ago) George Foreman Grill. It advertised as smokeless and had a larger grilling area. I had read a review about the item not heating up correctly but had read others that did not have a problem, so as with any item, you roll the dice and hopefully you get to write a good review at the end. Well, I am in the bucket of writing a bad review for the exact reason another person had complained. The elements do not heat to the advertised temperature of 425 degrees.
The grill is very well made, awesome removable grill plate with old style nonstick coating. Grease tray is easily removed and located underneath for a Clean drip free counter ! It is hard to measure the smokeless claim, I believe it says it reduces up to 88% of the smoke from previous versions. It still smokes during cooking. The video they show was not nearly accurate as to what happened while cooking two hamburger patties. I had smoke coming mostly from the back and a little on the sides along with grease splatter. Very simple operation. If you just want to fry a burger, hit the on button as it is preset for the highest temp of 425. The beautiful red light across the entire lid, slow flashes until it reaches temp at which point the red light turns green (see pictures). To reiterate, At green you should have reached the desired temperature.
Biggest problem was the temperature. My old foreman, patty on, 5 mins, patty visibly done. On this new model, patty on, 5 mins, without any disturbances to the cooking item, when I raised the lid, patty did not look thoroughly cooked. I stuck a fork tine in a patty and blood juice came out indicating it wasn’t fully cooked. So I went and grabbed my temp gauge. See pictures.
I fully cleaned my plates, turned it back on and heated it to readout of 425. Once green light indicated temp had been reached, I waited another 5 mins before I raised the lid to check temperature. I immediately checked temp upon raising the lid. As seen in pictures the top lid registers only 364 degrees and lower only 360. The lower grill was even lower in most areas, not consistent across grill. I checked all the temp setting, which are in 25 degree increments. From 350 degrees and down, the temp measured most accurate. I say mostly because although none were lower than stated temp, most were upto 10 degrees or so above listed temp.
I finished by reheating to 425 and then left the lid open, to see at what point grill would recognize the cooling of grill in order to reengage the heating elements. It took 8 mins of the lid being open before display registered heat loss and turned to red for reheating.
As a comparison, I took out my trusty old grill and heated it up. Sure enough, it registered 520 degrees. I sent new one back for a refund.
On the whole, the grill is really nice and I wish companies had better quality assurance. George Foreman is a renowned name, these products should live up to his legacy.
