Amazon should't sell this product
In the past, I have configured other routers successfully as access points. The TP-Link AC 1200 doesn’t allow you to access the router setup page if you have a modem-router combo gateway, but always defaults to the gateway IP. And there is no way that I found to temporarily bypass the gateway's router while configuring the new device. Amazon's help agent had no specific knowledge of the TP-Link AC 1200 router in question, nor about how computer networks are configured in general. It is unfair to these employees and to customers to represent that they have strong skills in these areas. My call was a complete waste of time. The manufacturer's "chat help" was even worse. In all I wasted at least 4 hours dealing with these people. The manufacturer's "Tether" app is supposed to make installation easy, but requires you to provide them with your email and password before you can sign in. This lack of security awareness and potential exposure to their marketing spam is unacceptable. The irony is that the router seems to be working perfectly on its default SSID and password, but using it that way exposes your network to any casual hacker. Though I purchased new, it was obvious that this item had been previously returned to Amazon by another customer, as the packaging had been opened and there was handwriting on the instruction pamphlet. Shame on Amazon. I will be returning this router.
