★☆☆☆☆
Very Disappointed
Background: I have watched all the extended versions of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. I have also watched the extended versions of The Hobbit. I have read the Lord of the Rings books and am currently reading the Silmarillion. I heard negative things about the show but still wanted to like it. After watching literally four scenes, I was so disappointed that I stopped watching. After listening to more reviews, mixed, some saying that it improved, I again tried to watch it. I made it to episode 4 and stopped watching again. Here are my honest reactions: 1. It does not have the grandiose feeling of the other movies… The sets and scenes feel very small and not epic. 2. The soundtrack is not thematic and memorable enough. Both LOR and the Hobbit had an incredible soundtrack to bring you into the action and thematic scenes. 3. The dialogues are not that great and some of the quotes and topics discussed by the characters do not seem to be plausible or fit in that type of culture and era. At times, I felt that the story and quotes are imposed from our context, and they felt out of place. 4. The characters are not likable or relatable. Galadriel is always angry and obnoxious. I get it that this might be what they are trying to present, but it seems to be too much. 5. The story and events at times seem to have copied events and characters from other LOR storylines. This is annoying. Hobbit was very different than LOR… and was done quite well. 6. During conversations, characters are doing awkward things that don’t seem to fit. This type of behavior was noticeable. 7. The acting was mediocre at best. I say this as someone who really enjoys acting in movies. I love Downton Abbey, Poldark, and series of those types. If you notice, I have not critiqued the movie at all as it relates to the actual world and storyline of LOR by JR Tolkien. My critiques have centered around the quality of the movie/series as its own. I say this to say that this could have been still good even if it radically changed aspects and characters. However, I stopped watching not because the they changed the world and story but because it was incredibly slow, wasn’t epic, disjointed, didn’t have excellent grandiose scenes, didn't have excellent soundtracks, and didn't have phenomenal acting. As a series/movie, it was poorly done. And I say this as someone who gave it legitimately three solid tries. I sincerely hope that Amazon listens to reviewers and makes adjustments for season 2.
