Directed to the wrong audience
I'm conflicted with this book. In the beginning and in several other parts it's exciting and a somewhat fun read. In general it's an interesting idea behind the plot. However, I feel like it doesn't really follow a clear storyline and at many points I got bored in the story. The majority of the story is about life in school and classes. Not much is happening and halfway through I gave up and moved on to other books instead. I came back of course to finish the story, but I will not continue to read the rest of the series. Whilst reading the book there were many things that bothered me. One thing is the dialogues. It felt very stilted with a lot of cliques and jokes that only were indicated to be funny jokes because the characters laughed. Another thing that bothered me were the relationships, both the romantic ones and the friendships. It all felt kind of "childish" with lack of a better word. They are supposed to be around 16 years old and reading the story I can see that the author tried to direct it to people that age. She has for example included the mention of sex and if the characters are virgins or not. They act somewhat younger in my opinion and when the mention of sex was included it just felt very forced and did not fit with the flow of the writing. I honestly think, based on the writing and style, that this book would have been better fitted as a children's book (if you remove the mention of sex of course). The writing and characters are way to childish to speak to an older audience. If I had read this when I was around 11 or 12 years old, I probably would have loved it. As it is now ... just no.
