Copious light leakage
I've tried several brands and styles of sleep masks, and have generally found the foam style ones to do the best job blocking light and staying in place on my head overnight. Inevitably, though, all of the foam ones I've used (maybe 5 now?) have only lasted a few months each, with the fabric covering peeling off relatively quickly. Consequently, I've been looking for a mask that will last longer, so I don't have to keep filling up the landfill with foam ones. I'd looked at, and skipped over, this Alaska Bear mask on several occasions. As best I could judge from the photos, the design and materials made me think that this mask would probably suffer from the same light leakage problem as other cloth ones I'd tried. After my last foam mask fell apart, though, I finally succumbed to the temptation of the huge number of positive reviews for this mask and decided to give it a try... ...and now I'm kicking myself for not trusting my instinct. This mask behaves exactly how I expected. The single strap across the middle effectively turns the mask into a taco shape, to a greater or lesser extent, depending on how tightly you adjust it. This, in turn, allows light to leak in from the bottom. There is effectively no structure to the mask, and no baffles around the nose, so I don't think there's a way to have it follow the contours of my nose and cheeks. I suspect the narrow width of the strap exacerbates the problem. On the positive side, I think the mask will last longer than the foam style ones. The construction seems to be good, and the silk fabric is soft and comfortable (note that it does press directly on the eyes, unlike the deep foam ones). The strap has a nice sliding adjuster too, rather than velcro, so it doesn't stick to my hair. Surprisingly, the adjuster generally stays in place, only needing minor tuning every week or so. The price is reasonable, as well. Overall, I can't recommend this mask. Honestly, I can't understand why it has so many 5-star reviews, either. Maybe my face is curvier than others? Maybe I'm more light sensitive? Unless you have a really flat face and only need a little light protection, though, it's probably best to keep searching. If anyone has a recommendation for a mask that works as well as a foam one but is more durable, please post your suggestion in the comments. Thanks.
