Designed to Fail! + How to Fix
We purchased this item after trying the amazingly disappointing FroliCat BOLT Interactive Laser Pet Toy. The BOLT is falsely advertised and moves very slowly in a small elliptical pattern. Our two cats thought was interesting but got bored with it before the timer was up. The DART appeared to be a better product and more fast paced.
The first thing you notice with the DART is the noise. It is loud and hard to ignore. The changing of the pattern, squeaking plastic parts and loud gears are enough to drive a calm person insane. Our cats enjoyed it enough that we have endured the horrible sounds. It does have several speed settings but unless you cat is also a ninja, you will not need the higher settings. As other reviewers have mentioned, the slowest setting is actually too fast.
After a week of use, the DART began to shut off abrubtley. Most of the reviewers who had this problem returned it only to receive another item that failed. So, I decided to take the risk and repair it myself.
FIX:
Remove the four philips screws on the bottom and you're in. First thing you will see are the cheapest, thinnest wires known to man. Seriously, I'm surprised this thing even lasted a week. On mine, the negative wire had detached from the battery compartment. On the negative lead, there was a large mound of solder, which was the source of weakness. So, not only are the components cheap and of poor quality, the product was also assembled in a shoddy way. Clean up and re-solder the wires and you should be back up and running. Our cats patiently waited and watched me as I repaired their favorite toy!
It was a quick fix but not one you should have to perform. The product is a great idea but the manufaturer compromised on too many things for me to recommend this product. (Unless you like do-it-yourself projects!)
