Even My Mediocre Expectations Weren't Met
I purchased this item as a replacement for a 20 year old convection oven that wasn't working perfectly. I purchased this brand because America's Test Kitchen had favorably reviewed another Hamilton Beach oven of a similar size, but I wanted a rotisserie. I had read the mixed reviews, but I wasn't sure from the reviews whether the complaints were legitimate, or whether the buyers were expecting too much from an oven selling for $90 at the time I bought it (and reduced to $75 shortly thereafter). So I decided to take the chance. First, let me say that the product information says that a 9 x 13 pan will fit in it. No, it won't. I couldn't find anything in the house 9 x 13 that would fit in it, and I had multiple different items that size and from different manufacturers that I tried. I'm not entirely convinced a 9 x 12 pan would even fit. It wasn't even close. That was a huge disappointment right there. I would not have purchased this oven if I had known a 9 x 13 pan would not fit in it. I didn't even try anything particularly complex or tricky in this oven, just basic stuff, and it failed in my opinion across the board. Having read the reviews, I didn't have high expectations, I wasn't expecting perfection for the price, but you could purchase any toaster oven randomly off the shelves at Target or Costco and get far better results. I took a turkey breast that I had previously cooked in my pressure smoker and just put it under the broil to crisp up the skin. and it never did. My old oven would have done that in less than 15 minutes and I never could get the skin crisp in this one. I also tried making biscuits in it, both with the convection function and without. I read the instructions completely beforehand and adjusted the temperature per the instructions, and when the biscuits should have been done, well risen and a lovely brown color, they hadn't risen and they were completely blonde. So I tried again without the convection and yes, eventually, they did turn the right color (although they never rose like they normally do) but it shouldn't take a half hour to cook biscuits, especially after the oven was preheated and running for over a half hour beforehand. As far as the folks who noted that the oven was really hot on the outside, they weren't kidding. My food would probably have cooked faster if I had put it on the outside of the oven instead of the inside. It was really hot - give yourself a third or second degree burn hot - on the outside. My mother said maybe this explained everything, and I agree with her: I'm betting the insulation on the oven is so poor that most of the heat generated goes out the sides, and doesn't stay in the oven where its supposed to be. I tried using this oven for about 2 weeks, and increasingly found myself not even wanting to try, wanting to use the old oven that I was trying to replace. Because the "broken" oven still works better than this one does, I decided why pay for what's become in essence a doorstop, and I returned it.
