Design Flaw? Poor customer service!
Only one star? Yes, and not because of any problem with performance. Turning the head on and then off gives you high beam, low beam, blinking lite and then SOS which is a nice touch. Hopefully I would never need the SOS. I keep in in my camera bag for checking camera setting in low light. So this flashlight is not used frequently. That is were problems happen with these Mini Mags and why only one star.
Keep an eye on your batteries. They can be fine Friday and Monday when you go to use the flashlight the batteries will have leaked and swollen so tight you will be hard pressed to get them out. This happen with my LED Mini Mag and two other non LED Mini Mags. It has never happened to my D cell Maglites, only the Mini. It has also happen to several of my colleges at work.
My flashlights came with Duracell batteries. Both Maglite and Duracell refuse to accept any blame. Maglite customer service says corrosion is not covered under warranty. Duracell says their batteries have a venting mechanism to prevent leakage. I think between the two products there is something going on design-wise that is causing this. My flashlight was in the off position BTW, and even so the batteries should not have leaked..
I would guess that the batteries are not able to vent properly in the Mini Mag or there is a chemical reaction going on between the two. As I say, this has never happened with my two 3 X D cell Maglites -- the LED version still has the original Duracell D cells that came with it and is still going strong.
In any case, neither company's customer service seems interested in passing this on to engineering to possibly correcting this issue. As for the damage, I don't care so much about the damaged flashlight as the attitude of their customer service which certainly has no concern for the customer, nor future customers.
