Poor design allows rain water infiltration which causes a soupy mess
I bought this composter ten months ago. It has not worked well for me.
What I liked about this composter is:
1. It's a tumbler. I had a terrific experience with my previous tumbler so I was optimistic about this one.
2. There are two separate compartments: one for cooking and another for adding. My previous one did not, so I had to cut and install a plywood divider. My hack worked well, but having two separate compartments is better!
3. It's made of plastic, which should last a long time.
However, my experience with this composter has not been good for the following reasons:
1. Assembly was time consuming. Each panel needs to be attached with several screws. Assembly's not a big deal, but it is a small project.
2. It's small. Big enough for the kitchen scraps from my family of four, but we didn't feel it was big enough to add yard waste.
3. There are a lot of seams for water to get into the compost chamber. I screwed the seams down tight, but still, water gets in. I think winter freeze/thaw expansion/contraction might've contributed to this problem, but the end result is that there's too much water in my composter for materials to break down. I live in Maryland and the spring/summer of 2015 has been wet, but there's no way there should be as much water in the composting chamber as there is. It's a soupy mess. Very disappointed. If you live in an arid climate it would probably be fine, but it doesn't work here.
The water issue is the reason why I'm giving up on this composter and am shopping for a new one. I can live with the challenging one time assembly and small size, but cannot live with the soupy mess that will not compost. I don't recommend this composter.
