Not all microfiber sheets are created equal - but most of them are... This is the same sort of thin, low-quality microfiber sheet as any you will find in this price range. If this feels nice to you, then that's great. The only reason I tried these was because they were cheap and because Comphy Co. doesn't make a black set.
Once when I was staying at a hotel in Portland during a road trip by myself up the coast, I was on the phone with my fiancee talking about my day while getting ready for bed. I pulled the covers back and shoved my feet in and then immediately jumped back out and started pulling the bed apart to look for a label because they were the most amazing sheets I'd ever had touch my skin. I had my fiancee look them up while we were on the phone and found that you could only buy them at spas and hotels that carry them. Then we found out the price and were like "forget it." But I'll tell you - after a night sleeping in that bed, I became obsessed with Comphy sheets.
When I got home, I broke down and bought a set online. Most I've ever spent on sheets. More than I've spent on like 4 or 5 sets of sheets. We had been sleeping on Modal sheets for a long time. Before that, I always bought flannel. Switching to a good microfiber sheet set is like night and day. I have since become a sheet snob. I've talked a bunch of friends into buying them, I've bought some as gifts, and now we own a blanket, 2 duvet covers, and 4 different color sets. They just don't have a black set.
So this Mellanni set - I wasn't expecting to be as good, but it's so not even close. I thought if they weren't good enough to sleep in, we would use them in the guest room... but they aren't really good enough for that I don't think. We're probably going to cut them up and use them to cover some trees we just planted to protect them from frost. Like I said - I'm a sheet snob.
They look as pictured. The top sheet hem is small and cheap looking. The fabric is see-through thin - and while it's soft enough, it just feels cheap. The fitted sheet doesn't seem deep. I didn't put the set on a bed - I probably won't ever do that. Washed them after pulling them out of the package - they held up okay, but don't resist wrinkles and the seams started to unravel a bit at the corners. The pillowcases have "decorative" lines on them. I'm sure they are meant to look fancy, but they look dated and cheap.
My fiancee bought a purple microfiber set of a different brand from another website for about the same price as these, and they were garbage too (though not as bad as these). I'm curious about the AmazonBasics brand, but probably won't go for it (even though they cost almost nothing) since we've got 4 sets of sheets and don't need another (until Comphy comes out with black).
Don't waste your money on cheap sheets (and there's no way these are 90 dollar sheets, by the way - I paid 35, and feel I paid too much). You spend 1/4 - 1/3 of your life in bed, so don't be afraid to invest in yourself and your comfort. Also, don't listen to all the thread count talk... most of it is lies. Cotton sheets are all terrible. Microfiber or alternative fibers like modal or bamboo are the way to go, but you have to get a good quality set. Go to a store and feel for quality. Also - buy extra pillow cases and swap them out more often than you wash the sheets. Your hair is gross, and you mash your greasy hair and then your face in your pillow. It will give you bad skin.
I've attached some pictures of the black set I bought here next to one of my Comphy sets. It's probably an unfair comparison. I mean, price-wise, there is a huge difference, so it makes sense that the quality is so obviously different. I guess when a product calls itself "HIGHEST QUALITY" in caps, you should take that as a hint that the quality is low. In the closeup shot, I tried to show how the Comphy sheet has a front and a back to the sheet - the sides have different textures. It's thicker fabric, and much softer and more durable. The Mellanni sheet (and most cheap microfiber sheets) are just thin fabric that's the same on both sides - doesn't resist wrinkles - doesn't hold up. That Comphy set has been washed dozens of times. Both sets are folded exactly the same with same amount of folds - flat sheet folded on top of folded fitted sheet (yes, I'm a fitted sheet folding master) - and you can see that the Mellanni set is just smaller. Both are Queen size. Even the pillowcases (standard) are smaller. Fabric quality is as different as an expensive suit vs a halloween costume. The reason I gave these 2 stars instead of 1 is because these are probably fine if you're like a freshman in college and live like a poor. I'm an adult, so I buy adult things. These are crap, but they're soft enough and will cover a bed.
