Whacked storyline, bad acting, terrible effects
Being a Tom Clancy fan, I was ready for this to be butchered, since none of the things he wrote has been done well since he passed. However, this was so far out there, its giving me pause to ever watch another movie made from one of his films.
Lets start with the fact that basically other than the name John Kelly, there is no relevance to the book Without Remorse, arguably one of Tom Clancy's best works, which gives you John Kelly's background story and how he got into the Jack Ryan universe.
Now lets go even further and completely replace characters not only from the book but from the Jack Ryan universe as well. Characters are added and many many more are just simply not present. All the writers did was basically let you know John Kelly is out for revenge no matter the cost. Add that to the terrible acting by Michel B. Jordan and its just a sideshow of a movie.
From the impossibly accurate gun shots from underwater to the surviving a passenger jet crash and successfully getting a working zodiac with outboard from about 100ft underwater while holding breath for 5 minutes, it was just unrealistic. A HALO jump, is high altitude low opening. Something that special forces train for. However, in order to do those at cruising altitude in a jumbo jet, the operators would need oxygen masks, which none of them had. Not to mention the freezing temperatures at that altitude.
Yet they open a cargo door without de-pressurizing the hold or cabin, and then Kelly runs from the cargo bay door to the passenger area screaming abort like a mad man. The people he would tell to abort were already in the cargo hold with him. A trained operator would not have done this, nor could he have reached the cargo hold 3 seconds after leaving the cargo area where the door was. And there was really no reason for them to abort, since they were all wearing black, would have had black chutes and been undetectable once off the plane. No way could the fighter pilot have seen them jump since he was on the opposite side of the plane and it was pitch black outside.
And this was just the tip of the iceberg. The entire movie is like this. A prolonged firefight in the middle of the city between two buildings across the street from each other, reminding me of block wars from Judge Dredd. Yet only two officers show up at first, then about 10 police cars, yet none of them even try to go into either building. And then 10 minutes later there are about 30 OMON (Russian Federal Swat basically) show up, and display the skill level of kids playing paintball in the woods. They can't aim well, constantly make tactical mistakes and almost all of them get killed by one man, who is wounded and has been shell shocked by an explosion that should have destroyed half the building but blew out a few windows. Then somehow John Kelly walks out with not even a limp, dressed in the clothing of one of the OMON.
I can't type anymore. Its a bad movie. That is enough.
