Great gameplay can't save it from itself.
Good game. It's fun to play.
Not great, as there are a decent assortment of bugs and glitches in the current build. Online play is far from greatness, and I've recently learned that the latency issues can be solved with the purchase of a PS4 Pro.
Now, I already have one, so it doesn't affect me, but it's going to be difficult getting my buddies [read, 'anyone at all'] to shell out $400 in order to play the game proper. 2K really needs to get their servers under control. It feels as though this lag and frame-rate dropping has been a constant since 2K15.
There are other glitches in the current game, like character archetypes using animations they have no business using. It's bad, but it hasn't killed online for me, yet.
What has been killing online for me are the micro-transactions, and man, are they prevalent. There's nothing wrong with choosing to pay in order to make the game better for one's self, but this game essentially takes the choice out of it for most. The grind for VC is absolute basura, and you can play myCareer [which is trash in every aspect, BTW. No skipping these cringe city cutscenes? Word?] as best as you can, get the highest mark available and get next to no VC. It's a 'Freemium' practice that is taken into art form in where you pay for progress, as the game is too difficult to grind properly at the jump and 2K makes it a priority to frustrate you into purchasing VC.
Now, 2K has always made it a habit to sell VC to its customers, but here it's taken to a whole nother level. Without VC the game is simply too limiting as is. It's a business model that is totally anti-consumer, and should be loathed instead of praised, especially when you're paying a premium for the game itself. Mobile games do this to no end, but it's even worst coming from a triple 'A' developer. Ridiculous.
Problem is, I don't see 2K changing their plan anytime soon. It's probably only going to get worse from here on out.
