The Worst thing I've ever read
Where to start? I bought this, hoping to see what the fuss was about. Id heard of the author before, but hadn't heard much outside of the occasional description of "narcissistic", so I had no idea what I was getting into.
The way Arthur was written made him feel like a bad self insert you'd see in fanfiction- he's strong, brave, heroic, and it seems like every girl he finds attractive loves him completely. Even a lesbian character admits to loving him. Every other character feels bland and only cut-outs of ideas- this one's a misogynist, that one's homophobic, and there's no other character traits put into them except the one that makes you hate them. Even Arthur's character can be summed up with one word- edgy. He hates his dad, and his dad's girlfriend (who the author never bothers naming) and his peers, and his fellow army men.
The entire book is populated with rants that frequently contradict each other, as one moment he's ranting about how no one matters and the next he rants about how we do matter, but only in driving people to murder.
And last but not least, the misuse of serious subject matter. To try not to spoil anything, there's at least two major times where he uses the worst possible thing that could happen to someone just to make Arthur look better. This is in no way OK and it actively spits on people who went through these things.
Overall, if you're looking to read this, please buy used, and don't give your money to this man. If this book has taught me anything about his person, he doesn't deserve it. Despite this, it was amazing, in a "watching someone run headfirst in a glass door at top speed" kind of way. A mess so hilariously terrible you want to see what the author will mess up next.
