I did everything the book said to do as well as connect the battery before plugging it in and turning it on caused a big flash a pop and some smoke. I am not happy at all! Edit: Tech support was friendly and is shipping a new one. I am still not too happy with this situation though. Edit2: I got the new one and called tech support to walk me through hooking it up because I had PTSD from the first one. We connected the battery, plugged it in and powered it up and it came up fine. They said the leave it off for overnight to charge before I use it. Fast forward to this morning, I power it up again and it did it's selft test, showed a full battery and poof it blew again without anything plugged in. The building fault indicator was not lit either time. Run away from this product, unless you like electrical fires. Edit 3: Support was real helpful again. I tested my outlet and it turned out it passes. They are sending another unit, but a upgraded model to see if that helps. I am skeptical but optimistic. Support is fantastic though. Edit 4: The upgraded model worked. No issues at all and it has a 2 day uptime so far. Look into getting the SMC1500C instead. It's packaged and built better. The one other thing I noticed is the SMC1500C is UL Certified whereas this one wasn't....It was either a bad lot or something else?
