Would be GREAT Except for Two Things
I recently switched from a comparable journal to the Six-Minute Diary. Initially, I absolutely *loved* this diary. No other gratitude journal I've tried is more thorough in describing the psychology behind the use of this type of system.
A great example of why this worked for me is that for me, "gratitude" means something different from "things that makes me happy." "Gratitude," for me, isn't a strong enough emotion to support the positive change I was hoping to make with the use of this diary. In fact, the previous diary I used did nothing to boost my mood and help improve my mental health or my view of myself and my life.
This diary *should* have provided that. If I was reviewing just the instructions, I'd give it an easy five stars. However, I bought this diary for the diary part of the journal, *not* for the instruction manual. The rest of it left a lot to be desired, and I suspect I'll be switching back once I've used this for six months.
Because I've read the reviews and noted the creators of this diary want to know specifically what's not working, I'll be as detailed as possible.
1. The Weekly questions are uninspiring, and not all of them apply to my life. I also feel it would be helpful to have more writing space for most of these, as my handwriting isn't tiny and I can't thoroughly answer these with the amount of space I'm given. I do *not* see myself returning to these in a year and reflecting, and they don't make me think deeply. Generally I'm in a hurry to get it done.
2. The "How I'll Make Today Great" section is intimidating. The previous (similar) journal I used had something similar, but it was much abbreviated. The space provided in the 6-Minute Diary is *enormous* and therefore I feel as though I should create a to-do list (the way I ordinarily would in my planner). However, since I leave this by my bed to use last thing before bed and first thing in the morning, I don't have my list. Then, when I return to this in the evening, I feel disappointed in myself for not having done the things I agreed to do.
I'm HUGE on honoring my agreements, particularly with myself. Failure to honor agreements can lead to issues with self-esteem and general feelings of self-worth. Because of this, this diary has had a negative impact on me, and I've stopped using this section other than to write "I'll go easy on myself today." It would probably be better used to list people or things I'm going to forgive today than it would things I'll do today. Since it's MY diary, I may do just that.
However, I would encourage the creators of the 6-Minute Diary to consider the impact making agreements has on a body, and the way that failing to honor those agreements can impact that person's life. In the future, this section might be changed to something which puts less pressure on the user, or omitted entirely.
