I used to love Entertainment Weekly. I started subscribing in the early '90s and would read it cover-to-cover each week. Then in the 2000s, it became increasingly political. At first it was little comments and digs here and there. Then it gradually became more aggressive. A few years ago I finally gave up and cancelled my subscription and never looked back. The final straw was when they viciously attacked a celebrity who made a politically incorrect statement that the editors did NOT like. This from the magazine that gave the Dixie Chicks the cover after their offensive remarks, letting them wrap themselves in the 1st Amendment, and which lectured its readers on the need for tolerance and willingness to hear opposing views. I agree with those principles and was disgusted at how selectively this magazine chose to follow them. It seems everything is getting politicized these days and it would have been nice for EW to have been a fun little non-political oasis. On those occasions when the entertainment world intersected with politics, maybe cover it without taking sides. To be honest, that's not the only reason I quit EW. I had also grown tired of all the fawning publicity puff pieces. Journalist meets Celebrity at a restaurant. Journalist details what Celebrity wore (so stylish!). The two discuss Celebrity's latest project with a breezy air, as though they're the best of friends. Celebrity laughs in response to Journalist's clever question. Journalist is impressed at how cool Celebrity is. You really must read/watch Celebrity's latest book/movie/TV show... On the plus side, the reviews section was usually pretty good. While I stopped reading it, I continue to give it as a gift subscription to my sister, who still enjoys it.
