Useful if you have nothing but trash to get rid of
I really wish I'd read the negative reviews of this book before buying it. I heard of it through a TV interview and looked at the high rating from so many reviewers and thought it must be great. I agree with pretty much all of the reviewers that gave it 1 star but would add another criticism: the author only deals with getting rid of "trash", gives load of examples of clients who filled astounding numbers of trash bags in the process of "tidying", but totally ignores the much greater challenge of getting rid of things that have significant monetary value. I don't have a problem with throwing away things that are broken or useless or donating stuff to the Salvation Army/Goodwill etc., but what about more valuable items or things that those organizations don't deal with? You're looking at tasks like holding a tag sale, trying to sell things on eBay, advertising in a local paper, dealing with an auction house or whatever - all of which require a whole lot more time and energy than throwing things into trash bags. Those are the tasks that always get me bogged down when I'm trying to get rid of stuff but there was no mention of that whole issue.
In addition,
- her chapter on organizing your closet is only useful if you live in Japan; they evidently have a typical closet very different from the US
- She goes into great detail on dealing with clothing, talks a little about books and papers, a couple of paragraphs on a few other things, and everything else is lumped into "Miscellaneous" - you're on your own.
