How to make can-opening difficult
I was forced to replace our 13 year-old Black & Decker can opener after the plastic handle fatigued and broke off. That old opener worked as it should every time, but this new one does not.
This is quite strange, considering that the mechanisms look to be quite similar. I would have thought that lifting the handle then placing the can below the blade on the handle would be an easy task. It's not on this new Cuisinart. The can has to be carefully and precisely placed against the opening mechanism, making sure that the blade is placed properly at the edge of the can. With certain types of cans this has taken me as much as five or six attempts before the mechanism will engage. I would not buy this can opener if I had it to do over.
There is one redeeming feature to this opener: the blade assembly is the easiest to remove for cleaning of any electric opener I've ever seen. That is not enough to compensate for its shortcomings though. Buy something else, I'd say.
Update: the blade/handle assembly to this can opener has finally fatigued and broken in March of 2014. It didn't last nearly as long as our old Black & Decker it replaced, but we really didn't expect that it would. Here's hoping the next one will last a good bit longer.
