stay far away - the bad reviews are real. I suspect a cheap, highly incompatible wifi chipset
Stop.. Read this before you buy.. Yes, all the other bad reviews here are right! I've had three Dropcams already, none of which had anything like the issues that I've had with the new Nest Cam. After 3 days of trying, I still have not been able to get it to connect - it sees my network, I select it and give it the password and then it goes bye-bye. No issues from my Dropcams. Nest has taken what WAS a brilliant product and F'd it up beyond belief (yes, their Nest app truly sucks - Dropcam app was far better). And all the negative comments about their support have been totally borne out by my personal experience. Having read the reviews about people averaging 90 minutes on the phone waiting for support, I thought I'd be smart and use their support email to get help. The stock reply came a full day later telling me that they'd really like to help me, so why don't I check their FAQ section online, and if that doesn't work out then call their phone support. Brilliant (not)... So I'm sitting next to my phone on speaker phone right now (AGAIN), with the call time at 1 hour and 17 minutes waiting for "senior tech", having already endured what must have been "regular tech". They have no idea what's wrong, but in talking with the tech guy, it's obvious they are FLOODED with calls like mine. Nest have TOTALLY F'd up the software and hardware of what they took over from Dropcam. And no one in Nest seems to give a rat's ass. This takeover has been so lazily and sloppily planned it's a joke. Frankly I'm amazed that the whole team hasn't been fired from top to bottom and replaced. So little care and quality control has been given this relaunch. In my search for a solution, I've run across countless complaints like mine, even from January this year, complaining that Nest doesn't have enough support staff for this product, and how long the wait times. I've seen responses by Nest where they promise they are hiring more staff. Bollocks, I'm waiting just as long to resolve this. Anyway, today I did the right thing, I bought a Flir FX. Brought it home, and had it working almost immediately. And it is a far better product, with very clever software. I've only called Neat again tonight to tell them to either send a new unit, or give my money back. Nest Cam is total sh**. It's incredible - please believe me and all the other problem reports here. Regardless of the 5 star reviews - consider how many times you see so many scathing 1 star reviews and you must know that there is truly a problem. My personal opinion? I personally suspect that they've used a crappy wifi chipset in this new Nest Cam, and that it is simply having wifi compatibility issues with a large percentage of consumer wifi routers. This is something that is completely inexcusable at this level of the mass-market game. But I can't see any other explanation frankly - yes, I've run commercial wifi systems for about 9 years, and recognize a duck when it quacks.. So, if my suspicion is correct, some people will get it to work just fine, while the unlucky ones will NEVER be able to get it to work. Save yourself the trouble and buy the Flir FX. I'm really shocked at how good it is, and the software has some awesome and unique twists, particularly the Rapid Replay feature. By the way, as I was writing this review, the "regular tech" came back on the phone and advised me that the "senior tech" won't be able to take my call as I'm too far down in the queue, and advised me that I need to hang up and let the "senior tech" call me back "I'm just a few minutes". He gave me no choice and refused to let me continue to hold. Frankly I think they are full of it. I think that the support teams are now being monitored to ensure that their hold times don't pass a certain threshold and are trying to work around the "system". Very sad that the company has put out such a bad product and, instead of fixing it, leaves all the pressure on their support team. Ok - I just got a call back from "senior tech" guy. He pretty much immediately offered to send a replacement. Sounds more like a "supervisor" than "senior tech".. I outlined to him my theory that they've used a very incompatible wifi chipset, and he did everything possible to avoid discussing it at all, neither confirming nor denying. I think I'm right. So maybe the new replacement has a newer chipset? We'll find out next week, I guess...
