Could not be worse
There is nothing that is worse than a poorly written period piece than a poorly produced, directed and inaccurate period piece. This show is riddled with ridiculous - and I mean ridiculous - sets, costumes, casting; the list is endless. In the dead of dirty, lawless Texas town, yet everyone is in clean clothes, wagon covers are clean, brother ladies are in pretty, clean costumes? In what universe? Large brick buildings? In what history books? Signage that is new, yet others are old and weathered - why? In an opening scene we find Tim McGraw driving a CLEAN wagon being pursued by a 5-6 gunmen shooting away, missing left and right, yet he manages to shoot a shotgun (with a makeshift scope) one-handed (never mind it contains two shells) and cleans house. Just like that. Wow! Did I skip over the part where a family is attacked on the Texas border by Indians dressed atypically (like white settlers, which is ridiculous and totally inaccurate since the Indians in that territory where mostly Comanche or Apache amongst a few others at that time and would NEVER dress in anything other than traditional garb). A young, white woman, in a clean, white dress shoots an Indian with some kind of music festival face painting at close range range, killing him. IMPOSSIBLE. Not only were the plains Indians superior horseman, they were deadly archers, did not speak English and would have snatched her up after issuing her some serious damage on the spot. There would have been zero dialogue. It’s these kinds of inconsistencies, far fetched nonsense writing, directing and production that makes movies about this country’s amazing tale of Westward Expansion silly. It belittles the Indians, and it undermines just how tough and darn near impossible life was on the western front. No one can survive being shot at multiple times at close range, and I mean no one - (and without being hit once). It’s totally absurd. Dialogue such as “is there a decent hotel in this town” when the towns were small, is the work of someone who did not do his research, and is not very intelligent. If this series was given the go-ahead, along with the budget it is because the far, far superior movie Old Henry is due to become one of the greats, and this hunk of junk is riding its coat tails. I am surprised that quality actors would sign onto to this garbage. Needless to say, as an avid history buff and voracious reader on all things Indians and this country’s great, fearless, westward growth, I would give this stupidity zero stars if I could. Shut. It. Off. And quickly.
