No Full Color (4:4:4) at 4k 60 hz, HDMI 2.0 Not Functional as Promised
This TV has excellent image quality that will impress, but if you want to display 4k 60 hz content at full color (4:4:4) via HDMI 2.0, this is not the TV for you. It will not work on this TV, or any other Samsung 4k TV at the moment. It has been confirmed by dozens of people with HDMI 2.0 sources, and I can add another fist hand confirmation to that via my HDMI 2.0 Geforce GTX 980 Graphics card. A Samsung support tech has confirmed it as well.
HDMI 1.4 supports full color (4:4:4) at 4k 30 hz, or half color (4:2:0) at 4k 60hz, but the advantage of HDMI 2.0, is that it supports full color (4:4:4) at 4k 60 hz. Big problem: this TV does not support full color (4:4:4) at 4k 60 hz, so it is essentially providing only HDMI 1.4 capability. This is significant because it means one half of the color information is lost at 60hz. Here is a photo that demonstrates this: http://i.imgur.com/0k6ncnE.jpg The blue text in the image demonstrates the loss of color information that happens at 60 hz on Samsung displays.
Upconverting from 1080 and 720 looks very good – better than any other brand. I am continually impressed.
Blacks are better than most at the “low” setting.
Greys are bad no matter what. They demonstrate how uneven the backlight is. At night it is disappointing.
The image quality is great as long as you stay at 30 hz on your 4k source. At 30 Hz, this colors and image astounds anyone in the room. It’s almost magical, but at 30 hz, it lacks the smoothness I want for fast motion. One can hope for a firmware update that will enable full color at 4k 60hz. I will update this review if that is enabled.
