★★☆☆☆
Appears to be mostly about Political correctness and White guilt
It might be full of great correct historical information, but the author seems to be a mind-reader ascribing motive behind every fact, saying all the incorrect information was intentionally given simply because the textbooks were written by white men. E.g. regarding Columbus and America, it is not as if the native American people had printing presses and were communicating with countries around the world. So, it stands to reason original texts would say the Spanish or whomever were the explorers to "discover" things. The book also ascribes today's cultural standards, mores and ethics to people of 400 years ago! The data in the book may be otherwise 100% accurate as to events of the times described, but these judgments turned me off completely as I see a bad pendulum swing in the other direction that's just as bad as the failings of original textbooks. Also, children learn abbout Columbus in what, the fourth grade? Who's going to teach them whatever ugly stuff there is to know about the guy in 4th grade intro to American history? For what purpose? No, it really looks to me this book just wants to bash the white man. ================ Addendum, post BLM: Those interested in this book might like to also like to read a book that tells of unbelievable censorship in the form of “standardizing” education so as to not offend anyone… “THE LANGUAGE POLICE: HOW PRESSURE GROUPS RESTRICT WHAT STUDENTS LEARN” by Diane Ravitch. A historian who worked in the U.S. Department of Education during the George H. W. Bush administration Pavitch was appointed to the National Assessment Governing Board by Bill Clinton. In her book, Ravitch provides in shocking detail replete with examples how education is intentionally dumbed down so as to make it more palatable to everyone, equally. She says “This is a process that effectively removes everything from tests and textbooks that might be offensive to any group or individual. It is designed to strip away words and ideas that offend anyone. Bias and sensitivity review has evolved into an elaborate and widely accepted code of censorship that is implemented routinely but hidden from public sight.” These people, through projecting their own racism onto everyone, have worked extremely long and hard to denigrate and demean the country’s heroes. And now, generations on, they continue teaching and indoctrinating their pathetic rendition of the foundations of this country to youngsters who never heard or read the history as written by those who actually lived it. Those books have carefully been vetted from circulation and school libraries, if not physically, then by delegitimization.
