★★☆☆☆
what good is great build quality and materials if it doesn't work?
So a more apt "overall rating" would be 0-5 stars (and I hope others will start doing this): Body 5 Keyboard 5 until the keys stick then 1 Battery life 5 until it's not 5, then impossible to repair 1 Fans 5 until you vacuum up enough dandruff and cat hair and can't clean it then 1 Connectivity 5, unless you want to connect anything other than TB3, then 0 Touch pad 5, until you start accidentally touching it while typing, then 0 Build materials 5, until the super-slippery surfaces lead to dropping the thing on the floor, then 0 I got mine with all the ram and SSD I could get, so it was absurdly expensive so Cost/value 2 Speed 5 seriously, it doesn't build up "byte plaque" like PCs do, requiring regular OS re-install Endemic marketing nagware 0 This is never appropriate, and Apple went way over the line with that stupid App store. again 0, I cannot even delete the "eye-TOONS app". Super User, change ownership, hell i can't get it out. New category: Force-ware. Being FORCED, or making it so freaking hard to remove or work-around designed-in features and apps. Apple has gone to great lengths to build marketing (and your personal information leak) into their "brand". A hard zero, but I'm considering changing the new scale to -10 to 10. The touch bar, I personally like - a clever way to expand laptop functionality. However, if you're a developer who uses things like "vi" for an editor, the escape key is no longer a key - so do NOT buy this laptop, McBoock, or whatever this thing is. Addendum, I somehow mis-keyed while typing this a total of 8 times, requiring me to key "back" to what I'm trying to do, apparently due to this enormous track pad. PC laptops have the same problem, or worse, when the "palm rest" activates the track pad in random ways. Keyboard design's health impacts 0 That stays zero (or -10 in the future), because all manufacturers should care that I have to have my hands repaired surgically periodically just to be able to use your keyboards. (this is actually true) My wacky conclusion: The 2018 15" McBawk Preux with touch bar and normal display (retina super-mega-plus LCD monitor) might still be better than my last Dell. At this point, it's like choosing between presidential candidates - which is the lesser evil? That reality means that the alleged "Free Market" does not actually exist, and serves to reduce the quality of everything. Let's find ways to demand more for our money, and for our lives.
