Laura Lipman should not have borrowed from Marjorie Morninstar
This book "borrows" a lot from Herman Wouk's Marjorie Morningstar, too bad the author isn't still alive (Herman Wouk recently died short of his 104th Birthday), he certainly would have had something to say about this. Did Laura Lipman think no one would notice? Where was her editor? Maddie Morgenstern Schwartz, Marjorie Morgenstern-Schwartz, Marjorie Morgenstern married a man named Milton Schwartz, so did Maddie Morgenstern both men lawyers, real estate attorneys both. Wally Wronken was a friend Marjorie Morgenstern met when she was still in college, who became a famous playwright. Maddie went to the prom with Wallace (Wally) Wright, who went on to become a famous (in Baltimore) radio personality. Both Walley's kissed their respective M's and never forgot it. Both Wally's were considered too young for the M's in both books. Both M's had tiny waists, both women skipped years in their education. Both had a skin toned rubber bathing suit that looked like she was nude from a distance. Both were not virgins when they married. Both when they lost their virginity stated "shouldn't we have broken a glass", they were both "good Jewish girls" from a good family. Both fathers had a business, Marjorie Morgenstern's father had an import business and Maddie's father had a pharmacy that went bankrupt. The mother's were both strong Jewish immigrants. I could go on, but if you don't believe me just read the book (Marjorie Morningstar). By the way it is a much better book. I think someone of Laura Lipman's talent should not stoop to plagiarism for that is what this is no matter how you look at it. It is my hope that the estate of Herman Wouk looks into this. Shame on you Laura Lipman you should be better than this.
