So dissapointed
After reading hundreds of reviews for Orbi; Luma & eero I was convinced the Orbi was the best (they all have good reviews). The initial installation was crazy simple. I was certain I have hit the home run of the new wave of mesh network systems hitting the market these days. My speeds were running 98 Mbs up and down (I pay for 100/100) in several tested areas in the home where I thought we used wifi the most. Now time to see how things go with our streaming devices on three different TVs. I connected all devices to the network and began streaming shows. Again everything seemed to work as expected with the great speeds I had measured.
Fast forward a few days. Streaming devices started to buffer. I restarted the modem and the Orbi router and satellite, everything seemed fine for a few hours. Logged in to router to check settings and noticed a firmware update (one was installed when I first fired the unit up) was available. I thought perhaps the update would stabilize the speeds (I still wasn't sure if it was the Orbi or my ISP which is still installing fiber in the area). I installed the firmware update, restarted everything and had great speed again. In less than an hour my speed tests started to fluctuate wildly when tested in the exact same location in the house. I went and connected by Ethernet to see what speed I would get wired. I got 99/99 wired.
I left everything untouched for the next several days and we continued to have buffering other issues over streaming devices along with wild changes in speed test results sitting in the same location. I contacted Orbi support via Chat (very good experience) and they had me test several different settings. Short version - still not fixed. One more firmware update an things seemed to stabilize a bit but not great.
Another interesting issue that I didn't pick up on right away was that from the time I installed the Orbi I started to notice noise on our kitchen TV which gets its feed over a iogear HDMI transmitter/receiver. After some troubleshooting I determined that the Orbi satellite was generating interference with this signal (when I unplugged it the noise went away). Interestingly, network speeds (when closer to the main router) seemed to stabilize when the satellite was unplugged. My conclusion is that the iogear HDMI system signal and the carrier signal used by the Orbi system must interfere with one another.
In the end I sent the Orbi back to Amazon and I am trying another system (review on that system after it has been running a while.
