Great device, DRM ruins it
This is a great piece of hardware, and the OS is great too. I like that it can be customized. We also own a LeapPad 3 and we were able to transfer some (not all) content from that device to this one. At the price that Leapfrog charges for content that was a bit disappointing since we had bought lots of "interactive books" for the LP3 that are not compatible with the Epic. Why I am not sure because the Epic is a much more capable device. Everything that's great about the Epic is ruined by one thing: DRM. We bought tons of videos (generally at $10+ a piece) that carried over to the Epic but unlike on the LP3 which could reside in my car for weeks at a time, the Epic has some outrageous DRM scheme that requires it to connect to the internet at least once every 2 or 3 days. Every video we try to open says "Aquire DRM Info Failed" or "DRM License Corrupt" and the only remedy is to attach the thing to wifi and then open each video so it can validate its DRM, then you're good for maybe a day or two. This doesn't help when you're driving in the car and have a toddler upset because all the content on the device is locked out due to DRM. The real kicker is it actually starts playing the video then brings up the DRM lockout notice, that makes for a fabulous situation with a young kid. Overall this device is great from a hardware and interface perspective but if you're going to charge the kind of money that Leapfrog charges for content then you need to drop the DRM or at least have the timeout last more than 2 or 3 days. If it wasn't necessary for the same content on the LeapPad3, why is it necessary on the Epic?
