This is our third Kidde i9010 smoke detector in four years, even though the battery is supposed to last for 10 years. I know, why would I keep buying the same smoke detector if it is so unreliable? The thing is, it is in a room with a ridiculously high ceiling, and replacing the smoke detector with another that fits in the same mount is less drama than having to replace the mount as well. So, we'll probably be faced with struggling with a ladder at 3am again (because when else would the batteries die?) in another 2 years or so. There was a recall on the last detector we had, but it only applied if you could see a yellow clip inside. Our defective one didn't haven't the yellow clip, so we were out of luck. I'm sure there is probably some kind of warranty, but the time it would take to produce the required receipts and proof of purchase seemed like too much work. There is a "use by" date on the detector, so we know that we didn't just install one that had been on the shelf a long time. We also wrote in the date installed on the last one; it definitely is not just us misremembering how long it's been. We have this same smoke detector in a couple of other rooms, and haven't experienced this problem. Overall though, we're still talking about 50% of them not lasting as long as advertised.
