Just had FDNY and ConEd here for a gas leak. Does not work.
So we had the smell of gas in our apartment for a few days. Must just be my imagination, because this device would have detected it, right?
Negative.
FDNY and ConEd stormed our apartment and found a leak in an adjacent apartment, spewing out gas into ours. But this device didn't even make so much as a tiny beep. Nay, it said carry on.
So I tested it, and indeed, it does not work. I literally put it up to the unlit burner spewing gas (with a 9volt backup battery) and it just sat there. Check the video.
Don't bet your life on it.
EDIT: So you'll notice a ton of 5 star reviews based on the fact it doesn't make any false alarms right? You don't buy a detector based on how quiet it is. Remember that.
EDIT 2013-09-10: Check the comments, I'm not the only one getting a defective alarm here. I'm fairly sure that defective alarms when it comes to explosive gas is a legal no-no, but when I called customer service the forwarded me to their Public Relations officer, who gave me a cookie-cutter speech and promptly ignored any of my responses.
EDIT 2015-02-06: Check the comments, after almost two years, the company finally responded! I assume either it took them that long to think of a better response (after their original PR rep gave me a horrendous and rude initial response) or it took several hundred people seeing all the negative reviews here to be worth addressing. Not sure I would want to deal with a company that takes this long to respond...
