Very disappointing
I am absolutely baffled by all the wonderful reviews for this book. I was excited to read it after hearing so much praise and was very, very disappointed. It really wasn't funny to me at all. I guess if you find humor in making fun of people in a mean spirited way (ugly baby, toothless commissary bagger), fart jokes and constant talk about IBS, this book will is a hoot. I have a spouse in the military and I hope that people don't think we are all that way. The author constantly contradicts herself. She prides herself on giving 'toys' to the other wifes but freaks out in the Hustler store. She talks about how awful "rankism" is yet she makes sure you know she is an officer's wife and constantly talks about the rank of her neighbors. Heaven forbid a guy hits on her. She will put him in his place because she is an "officer's wife". I get it. Basically, I found the book to be self centered and immature. I also don't think that a lot of her advice was very useful. Honestly, this is 2011, not the 1940's. Some military spouses stay at home but a lot of us work. We don't need to hear about how we need hobbies to keep us busy. Work, kids and being single parents while spouses are deployed (sometimes for a year or longer) is quite enough. I wish there were more books talking about how spouses can deal with the dilemma of balancing frequent PCSs and maintaining our professional careers...how to be independent while being the dependent spouse. Maybe I just haven't "accepted being a military housewife" as she encourages others to do. I find that there is a lot of humor in the miltary lifestyle. I just don't think she did a good job of writing about it.
