Paint Rubbed Off After a Year
We owned our Bemis seat with its "superior high-gloss finish" that "resists chipping and scratching" (taken from their website) for about a year and a half before the paint started wearing through to the "durable molded wood" underneath.
We're a family of four, and we use our toilet pretty normally. We don't sit there wiggling around, rubbing our butts back and forth, abrading the paint (which, if it were actually superior, would be able to withstand such antics anyway, I would think). And none of us is overweight, so there is a normal amount of pressure on and flesh contact with the seat. It's simply as cheaply made as the price would indicate.
Edited to add:
Unfortunately, the replacement seat we received from Bemis' fantastic customer service department had the exact same issue: one year later, the "superior high-gloss finish" had worn down to the wood underneath. (Seriously, Bemis, is one year the best you can do?) I think my next toilet seat is going to have to be plastic...
