Problem With Reconnecting in the Event of a Power Failure
I purchased and installed an EcoBee 3 this past August in conjunction with a brand new furnace. The unit is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California where temperatures at night are now dropping well below freezing. This is a second home and we are away from it for weeks at a time. In the past we have simply set our thermostat to hold 50 degrees and that has avoided any pipe freezing problems for the 25 years that we have owned this property. For the past few days I have been trying to connect with the thermostat over the internet to check on inside temperatures and have been getting a constant error message that my EcoBee is not connected to wifi (It was working fine prior to a couple of weeks ago). According to my internet service provider my cable modem/wifi router are working fine. I have had a chat session with EcoBee and learned that it is possible for the unit to lose connectivity and "under some circumstances" to get reconnected requires that the unit be physically disconnected and reconnected. Obviously this requires physical presence which is impossible if you are away from home. Apparently EcoBee is working on a firmware fix, but at this point it does not appear that you can rely on the unit to reconnect in the event of a power failure or power glitch that temporarily takes you modem/router offline.
