Experienced CPA offers his opinion
[This is actually a repeat of my 2016 review but still valid] As a CPA I have used and supported clients with their QuickBooks software since it was a DOS version. I can say without hesitation that each new release of the software is worse than the one before, except possibly the move from DOS to Windows.
Intuit makes quite a bit of money from their check printing and payroll services. However, you can find the same quality of checks and you can actually do payroll WITHOUT their payroll updates. My office actually uses QB 2010 for payroll for a number of clients. We wrote a template that can be manually input for smaller number of employees (say 12-15) and it takes about 20 minutes from start to EFTPS finish. With larger ones, we can import the information. We have never made an error on any IRS forms.
So, you CAN do payroll yourself without having to upgrade every 3 years to their monopolistic new and worsened software, and save on their onerous annual fees.
However, I do have to admit, even though the desktop version is adequate for most companies, and I actually recommend it, it is far superior to the QB Online version. I have been involved in conerting many companies from online to desktop
