Disappointment: Patterns for Costumes Not Provided & Rude Customer Service!
I am among the knitters who are incredibly disappointed in this book. I pre-ordered the book and at the time little information was available other than the gorgeous costume photos. Excited to knit these costumes, I purchased the book right away.
I received the book in the mail today and was heartbroken when I discovered that none of the patterns for the costumes in the book were published. Instead, there are patterns for very "dulled-down" sweaters and wraps inspired by the costumes. Even the less "out there" costumes had no resemblance to the patterns provided in the second half of the book.
I contacted the author and publisher through their websites asking for supplemental patterns of the costumes that I had expected to see. Let's hope something comes of it. Otherwise I'll have no choice but to return the book as I am not interested in knitting any of the patterns published in the second half of the book.
UPDATE:
I emailed Virtual Yarns asking for supplemental patterns for the costumes. While I did share my disappointment, my email was pleasant. Unfortunately I received an incredibly condescending and belittling response from the VY team. Not only will I be returning the book and updating my review to one star, I will also be sure to never purchase products from Virtual Yarns again. Here is their response:
Dear Madame,
It is always advisable to read the product description before making a purchase.
I have copied the two simple sentences from the very prominent product description which accompanies the image of the front cover of GLAMOURIE on sales sites and has done from the first moment the book appeared on these sites.
“While the first half of this book is an unrestrained flight of fancy, the second half contains full instructions for knitting beautiful garments based upon each costume, all written with Alice Starmore’s trademark accuracy and precision. By developing each of these patterns from its associated costume, she has revealed how her mind works and how her imagination led her from the initial inspiration through to the final design.”
Alice's short introduction is also available to read on sales sites. It is very short and easy to read and understand. I quote her words from her introduction –
"THESE GLAMOURIE COSTUMES ARE NOT THE STUFF OF EVERYDAY WEAR AND ARE WELL BEYOND THE PRACTICALITY OF WRITTEN INSTRUCTION"
All the designs and some costumes featured in the book were published by Virtual Yarns on our social media pages prior to publication. You did not purchase the book from us and so we cannot offer you a refund.
With very best wishes,
Fiona Macdonald, VY
