$50 Kindle - the Tree Sloth of Android tablets. Cute, harmless and so very slow.
Well, I hate it. Let me count the ways. 1) Painfully, awfully slow response. I tried for three days to ignore it, but I could paint web pages faster than this little brick brings them up. 2) Wireless connection appears to be failing intermittently, though you wouldn't know it to look at the WiFi icon, which shows a good solid connection. Even happens 3 feet away from the router. I did turn off the WiFi power saving feature, but it didn't help a bit. And I'm a fully functioning, IT professional with 30+ years of experience, with a rock-solid, high-speed wireless network that performs flawlessly, daily, for 10 or 12 other devices. 3) Did I mention slow? Slow to the point of being unusable in ANY realistic sense of the word? Pulling up any app or, lord help me, actual content is just ridiculously slow. I got to the point where I would just set the device down and come back to it later to see if anything had happened. Really, any other device I have in the house, including a four year old iPad, any cell phone that crosses the threshold, anything, just beats the pants off this thing. 4) Slooooow. Thought it was the hardware, but being who I am and with my particular skill-set, I threw up my hands, wiped the device, and loaded a non-Amazon version of Android on it. And it was no longer slow! Well, fancy that. I've even restored it back to the Amazon default, and guess what? That's right. Slow. Snail slow. Paint drying slow. Congress-slow. Save your $50. Or if you're really into slowness, make a nice donation to the Costa Rica Sloth Sanctuary instead.
