★★☆☆☆
Be prepared to lose 1/3rd of your screen
First the pros: Nice screen size. Rugged, dropped it on hard asphalt a couple of times and didn't even scratch it. Pretty decent navigation UI. Won't overheat and shut down like a phone. Weatherproof. Cons: Basecamp software is horrible. Very confusing,non-intuitive and overly complicated (am I planning a trip, laying down a route, hiking ?) . many times you export a route to the GPS and it will still redo the path based on device settings, completely ignoring any custom routing you may have done in the desktop app. You really need to keep one eye on the darn thing and make sure it's not going to lead you down the garden path. The biggest problem though is the new "Incident detection" system, which is supposed to pair with a phone to send an SMS to designated contact if the device thinks you've been in an accident. Unfortunately, this "detection" is set off by a fruitfly passing within 10 feet of your motorcycle. I rode 9000 miles last month and the on-device popup (which consumes 1/3rd of your screen) was on for pretty much the whole time. There is no way to turn this feature off, and it does not matter if you have no phone connected or SMS notification number configured. Apparently Garmin has promised to fix this in a future update, so maybe wait for that update. Or look at advrider forums on advice on how to use a rugged $50 phone instead.
