DANGER TO BIRDS, DO NOT USE MESH TRAY ATTACHMENT
2nd Edit: The crazy thing here is that I witnessed very similar traumatic event happened with a metal mesh tube finch feeder from Perky Pet (I love safely feeding birds and have used many feeders over the years). These manufacturers are slapping together wire mesh for these products without doing a critically important and detailed QA of how tiny the holes get it you dont weld correctly/safely. If I had the funds I would figure out a way to create safer metal mesh items, because I used to love them. These corporate ding dongs have the capability to fix these issues and don't, bc would cost some money to fix. Absurd. Try Droll Yankee items or make sure to skip metal mesh items if you can. EDIT: I cannot emphasize enough how gruesome it was to find the trapped goldfinch who amputated its own leg trying to escape this metal tray. Worse, that this product is still for sale with the fatal design flaw is beyond disgusting and infuriating. I've written letters to this company begging them to at least remove the tray attachment from the product but they haven't, nor have they fixed the design of the metal mesh seam. Awful to sacrifice birds to make a buck, GrayBunny. -- To be clear: the dangerous part is where the seam where the metal mesh connects to the square metal frame. I have had this for a couple years now. Not major problems, all in all seemed ok minus an annoying tilt. Until today, one of the most gruesome and worst things I've ever seen happen, because of this feeder. The tray attachment that is metal mesh is normally where I put some food between two hanging feeders. Goldfinches, chickadees etc. eat from there. Today I noticed a bright goldfinch weirdly laying in the tray and not flying off. I approached it thinking it would fly away, but it tried and failed. When I got closer, I saw the reason it failed to fly away is because its little talons were stuck in the tiny holes of the metal mesh tray. In order for me to help free the bird, I had to approach, which caused the bird to panic, and he ended up dangled over the edge of the metal tray with a clearly broken leg, blood everywhere,s still while trying to fly away. I finally was able to get the tray down and cover him to calm him, then I tried to free his stuck talons (stuck in two places) without amputating the leg, so I could bring him to the wildlife rescue center. It was impossible, so I put the bird stuck to the tray in a shoebox, and he's in getting euthanized now. This was literally all because of the feeder design. Maybe the mesh holes need to be bigger, or smaller, but either way, this should not have happened. This product was purchased as a way to help and protect the birds, not gruesomely kill them. If you purchase this, you should definitely remove the mesh tray attachment, at the very least.
