★★☆☆☆
Great potential, unfortunately doesn't charge internal battery while devices are connected
Pros:
Good weight and size for a combined dual port charger with USB-C PD and a 5,000 mAh battery: 6.4oz and about 0.25 inches larger in every dimension than Anker's dual port 30W PD charger. This is almost my perfect minimalist travel charger, but for the cons...
Cons:
According to the advertising: "The charger will charge connected devices first before recharging itself" however it doesn't get to the "charging itself" part... This is the big con, and the reason I may be returning this charger: the internal battery doesn't charge when another device is plugged in, even when that device is fully charged and pulling less than 0.1A. I've tested this with a fully charged iPhone 6S and iPhone 11 on both Apple's USB-C to Lighting cable and a standard USB-A to Lightning cable. In both cases, the internal battery on the Fusion 5K will not charge until the given phone is physically disconnected, as even a fully charged phone pulls enough power to block the changeover to internal charging of the Fusion 5K's battery. Within ten seconds of unplugging an external device, the internal battery starts to charge itself.
So if used as a primary travel phone charger overnight, you'll need to remember to unplug all devices from this charger for 2.5 hours (advertised charge time) to charge up a fully depleted Fusion 5K internal battery. You can't plug in your phone and expect both phone and Fusion 5K to be charged in the morning as the advertising suggests. Unfortunate, as my primary use-case for this was as a minimalist all-in-one travel charger.
To summarize the issue: This charger NEEDS pass-through charging.
USB-A Power IQ port is the older version 1, which only supports 5V at 2.4A max; no quick charge capabilities here.
USB-C PD port supports 5V at 3A and 9V at 2A according to the label—which should be 15W and 18W respectively—but the 15W limit listed in the description does apply here, so even at 9V, 15W is the max, which is 9V at 1.66A. Charging a Macbook reports charge speed as 15W. This is NOT an 18W PD charger.
The attachment point for the AC plug is not smoothly integrated into the body, and juts out the top with a fairly rough edge. It looks like it should come off to attach different plugs like an Apple Macbook charger, but it's glued on. You can see this a bit in the product pictures a bit and it's noticeable in person. This doesn't affect functionality, but the non-flush edge does look unfinished.
Conclusions:
I've docked one star for the unfinished edge, while the non-optimal charge speeds (15W PD port?) contributed a bit as well. This is all fairly minor, and would deserve a half star docked if that were possible.
Finally, I've docked another two stars for not actually charging once connected devices are charged, despite advertising this as a feature. This charger has a lot of potential, and pass-through charging alone would make this a solid 4.5 stars.
