Hue Products...is this a new version, do I even need the new version! Ugh
The product is great and it's a nice addition to my hue lights and smart home solutions. This said, I have a big problem with way this product, and others, are marketed and shown online (I believe this to be entirely a hue issue, not Amazon). With this switch there are two different versions of the same product. One has buttons with the labels on and off. The other has an 'O' and an '|' representing On and Off. To further confuse things, Hue has different versions of their website (US, UK & possibly Canada), and it’s not always clear which one you landed on. To make this even more confusing, if possible, is one referenced the switch as Version 2. After a lot of rearch I called Hue support (bright spot - excellent customer service). They said there was no 2nd gen switch, one was for the US and the other for the UK. He said he was baffled as to why their product images keep flip flopping and stated there was no way to get the U.K. Version in the US. He added, it wouldn't work here anyway. Normally I wouldn't care, but I had to upgrade my bridge to version 2 to gain Apple HomeKit functionality. I'm an early Smart Home adopter, including Nest, Dropcam, Smartthings, Hue, Echo, etc and all the infrastucture to use them. I wasn't unhappy with the requirement to upgrade my bridge. Additionally, I noticed a marketing effort to push you away from the cheaper product bundles and make it sound like buying a more expensive one would give you more storage (even though the A19 starter kit $69 contains the exact same 2.0 Bridge, and storage, as is in the pricy bundles. Also, if you know their products, you know 2nd gen refers to new White Ambience bulbs and 3rd gen refers to the richer colored lights (not clear for someone new). This is a BIG issue when a company continues to sell both new and old products. Adding to the confusion, the marketing info for the new and the old bridge doesn't really make clear what the difference is and when or if you would need to upgrade or purchase a new model. Smart homes are a new frontier, a seasoned and trusted company like Philips shouldn't confuse people and product lines making, transforming it into the 'Wild Frontire'! Hope this helps others to avoid the wasted research I conducted.
