Insecure; Easily Opened Despite The Lock
This "safe" will probably protect your money, watch and cell phone from a light fingered chambermaid but it is easily opened by someone who wants to get what is inside. This was demonstrated to me by my son shortly after it arrived. When the safe comes, the lock is set to open on 0-0-0-0 with instruction on how to change the code to one of your choosing. You open the safe, press a small lever to the right with your finger or a screwdriver, dialing in the desired code while the lever is in this position. Because the lever is so small, the instructions also say that if your finger slips off the lever before dialing in the complete desired code that you repress the lever and continue. I followed these instructions, then put my money in the "safe" and locked it dialing one of the 4 wheels to a different number. I had bought the safe because I had discovered that a maid was stealing some of my money and thought it would give me the protection I wanted without having a key that might be found and used to open it. About an hour later I was showing my new safe to my son, who is visiting for a week. But when I dialed in the new code and pressed the button that opens the lid, nothing happened. We repeated the entry of the code several times, then tried various other combinations, but no luck. So now $500 was in the safe and I could not get to it. My son said "no problem". Telling me about a show he had seen on the TV , he pounded a corner of the safe once, hard, against the concrete. The 2 halves separated, though still locked, just enough for him to insert a screwdriver and slide the screwdriver so that it sliced through the hinges like a hot knife through butter. The lock is impressive, but the hinge is flimsy, just 7 little circular pieces of thin plastic with a rod about the thickness of pencil lead that passes through them. In less than 2 minutes, from start to finish, the safe was in two pieces and the money was in my hand. The weakness of the hinge vs the strength of the lock is something I would not have know had it not been necessary to break into the safe. The busted safe is now in the trash can, but after seeing how easy it was to open, not much was lost except the $18 that I paid for it. I am giving the safe 2 stars because it is better than nothing. But if you buy this safe, keep in mind the protection it offers is mostly in your mind.
