If this book was a cake it would be made up from 95% icing and whipped cream. It looks great, and is tasty in small parts but is basically extremely unsatisfying to get through. The real beginning to the series only starts in the last dozen pages of the book and the rest is background and filler. Such a waste. The chapter structure is unnecessarily rigid and makes the entire book feels forced. There are weird spelling/terminology changes that don't add anything for me (the whole he / she thing - yes, I get it. Very clever conjoining the words because of the hermaphroditic nature of the species, but it just comes across as an overly thought out literary device to me). I could go on... This is far from Hamilton's best work.
