Don't work in cold weather!
I purchased two pairs of these radios for family use while skiing. I liked the compact style and flush buttons that won't get inadvertently pressed while in your jacket pocket. I bought them to replace an old pair of fr60 Talkabouts we have been using for years while skiing with no problems. Even though these old workhorses are still working, I decided to replace with the more compact MH230R.
Unfortunately, these radios DO NOT WORK WHEN THEY ARE EXPOSED TO COLD WEATHER!! DO NOT buy them to use for winter / cold weather use!! I am soooo disappointed in Motorola with these radios. If you go to their web site there is a picture of a man holding a radio on top of a snowy mountain.... yet these radios don't work in that environment! Specifically, the transmit function stops working once the units get cold.
After a frustrating weekend on the slopes with my new non-functioning radios, I tested the radios versus my old fr60 Talkabouts. With the MH230Rs fully charged and turned on, I placed them outside in 10degrees F weather for 45 minutes along with my fr60s. After 45 minutes in the cold weather ALL of my fr60s still worked fine, while NONE of the new MH230Rs were able to transmit.
How could Motorola ignore such an important environment as cold weather?? Don't they test these radios in this kind of environment? We consider the radios a safety requirement for our family - and this flaw clearly put our family at risk.
On the positive side, amazon.com made the return easy and refunded my money quickly. Thanks amazon!
