GENERATOR EXPLODED AFTER 3 WEEKS!! Updated March 22, 2018
I am a homeowner in the Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, I am not longer a resident due to Hurricane Irma. Please note: I never write these reviews but feel compelled in this case to share my story with any future consumer in the market for a portable generator. Caterpillar is a disgrace and a light needs to shine on companies who treat people like this. I have included pictures.
I purchased this generator brand new from our local hardware company after the storm. The island is destroyed without power, phone, or internet. I justified paying more for the Caterpillar brand believing I was getting a better product, and a good company that would stand behind it. They have proved me wrong on all fronts.
First off, I have come to realize that Caterpillar outsources these generators to China. So I was not getting what I thought from the beginning, but any product can have imperfections. My faulty generator could have burned our already crippled home to the ground, but we dodged a bullet there.
The most disgusting part of this story involves their "customer service" following the incident. They strung us along for 3 MONTHS claiming they were "investigating." I would constantly have to call to check on the status or I would hear nothing. ( As if I do not have plenty of life-changing events and decisions going on after the storm than to worry about this) In the end, not citing one part of their BS "3 month investigation" they denied our warranty because we did not register the product. We had no phone, internet, or power!!!
Bottomline: You have some good choices in this market. People on island raved about Honda, Ryobi, Dewalt generators. If you prefer to roll the dice with Caterpillar, then hopefully your generator (Made in China) does not explode. If it does, be prepared to deal with a company with zero sympathy or compassion to try and help you. Exploiting hurricane victims is truly shameful.
UPDATE: While everything above is true, I believe a good company acknowledges mistakes and always looks to improve where errors do not repeat themselves. I give Caterpillar that credit here. I received a call from a Caterpillar executive who had recently seen our file, and he called me immediately and took care of us. He also informed us that our case had created change with their process of handling these customer service issues. Not only did they refund us, he insisted on shipping us another new generator so when I am satisfied with their product performance (hopefully) years from now, I will have the confidence to recommend their brand again. Great guy. Every good company makes mistakes, but how those mistakes are resolved separates the good from the best. Caterpillar ultimately did the right thing!!
