Not recommended for Kitchen use
I've owned 5 digital scales over the past 30 years used exclusively in the kitchen. I weigh everything in metric (Grams) from liquids to dry goods in cooking and baking. Even water, beans, and cream for coffee. So my scale gets turned on/off at least 20-25 times per day. Recipes come out perfect when you ditch the scoops and measuring cups and go by weight.
So, my criteria for a KITCHEN scale is this (#1 most important):
(1) Buttons and LCD display MUST BE PROTECTED from liquid and dry goods (e.g. flour) spills. This ETEKCITY scale has NO protection. Look closely at the pictures and you can see gaps around the buttons. Plus the buttons sound snappy and plasticky compared to all my previous scales. The exposed buttons and display were the main deal-breaker for me and alone warranted the 1 star rating.
(2) NO Glass tops, only buy durable plastic or stainless (preferred). I bought a glass one years ago and shattered it a week later. Never again.
(3) Must have a discrete On/Off button. This scale turns on using the Tare button. To turn off you must hold the Tare button for 3 seconds or wait for 2 minutes for auto-off. For my usage that 2 minute auto-off is 40-50 minutes/day and probably battery changes weekly. Might not be a deal-breaker for casual use for most of you but it was for me.
(4) Fast On and Tare functions. My current scale bought in 2012 turns On and Tares within 1 second. This ETEKCITY scale takes 3 agonizing seconds. Slower than all my previous scales in 30 years. It may not seem like a lot but for me it's a step back in technology. It is also much slower to respond to weight changes as I'm adding ingredients. Disappointing.
My current 2012 scale works perfect. Just wanted a larger platform. This ETEKCITY scale has a nice size stainless platform although NOT pure stainless. It's a thin stainless surface bonded to a plastic platform. It has 11lb capacity and seems fairly durable overall. The snappy buttons are questionable for long term use and definitely not spill protected as mentioned above. Neither is the LCD display.
So, this is a good scale for dry goods, postage etc. As a kitchen appliance NO. You WILL SPILL liquids etc. on it. Trust me. I do several times per week. Stick with my criteria above and you'll be happy.
