Honestly I'm kind of salty I paid $9 for this. I would've maybe given it two stars if I checked it out at the local library for free, but I'm annoyed I invested my hard earned American dollars into this book. Either Rupi Kaur is running the biggest poetry scam of all time or this was the most over hyped book in existence. This was honestly one of those books that halfway through I thought, really? I could have written this. The majority of the "poems" are like 10 words or less. This book kind of seems like one big waste of environmental resources. Entire pages with hardly anything written on them. In my experience, Putting spaces at random points in your sentence doesn't make it poetry I love slam poetry and spoken word poetry and was hoping to get the same vibe from this, but sadly, no. I prefer poems will a little more meat to them. I will say, there are a HANDFUL of good poems in here. Like maybe 5-7. But most of them are just a random sentence or two with some squiggly drawing next to it that we're supposed to think is "amazing artwork." I seriously don't understand if everyone is just reading into the completely non-thought provoking "poems" in this book and making up their own deep meaning or if I'm just totally missing the boat on this one. I think Rupi is duping us. If you told me my 9-year-old nephew and 6-month-old niece collabed on this book, with him covering the poetry while she handled the artwork, I would fully believe you. And if you told me they completed it in one day, I would also believe you. And if you told me they were both on Ambien while they did it, I would STILL believe you. If you're looking for metaphors, deep poems, clever writing, etc then pass. If you're a 10th grader who just got dumped by Jimmy from home room and you wanna post a snapchat of one of these heart wrenching break up poems to express how angsty you are, you'll love it. Don't believe the hype. Try to check it out at a library or borrow it from a friend to know if you like it or not before you waste your money on it. Actually hmu if you want my copy because I sure don't.
