A lazy production for one of the largest franchises
The words that best describe this compilation are disappointing and lazy. This is mostly going to be a review of Casino Royale as I haven't touched the rest of the 3 movies, but I largely purchased this collection for my favorite of the Craig bond movies. This is a pure cash grab in the lead up to the new release of Bond 25. MGM, this is your baby... you should be ashamed.
Watched on a calibrated OLED C8 with a Panasonic ub820 via Denon 4400.
Let's start with audio - The Bond franchise is one of the largest franchises in cinema history. None of the movies in this collection receive boosted audio. This should have been the biggest red flag. Already this is not an improvement over the bluray. No atmos or dts x option here, which would have been a nice boost.
Video - Oh wow, this is in Dolby Vision, they must have focused their resources on the picture quality right? At least for Casino Royale, this was an extremely lazy and dull presentation. I don't know where they transferred this upscale from, but it is soft, devoid of detail, and has a disappointing color.
Digital - No 4K digital codes here, they've sold us HD digital codes twice over. Meaning this is even less valuable then you might have thought. And that's interesting because I know there is a 4K copy of this movie available on iTunes.
Price - The price of this collection was quickly dropped from 70 dollars to 40 dollars before launch. I think they wanted to sell enough copies before people were able to give reviews of just how poor a product this was. 40 dollars is pretty enticing for 4 movies, though my interest was largely in Casino Royale alone. The reality, however, is that this isn't worth 40 dollars. I would pay at most 20 dollars for this collection. Note, you can get the entire Bond collection on bluray for 80 dollars. 24 movies for 80 dollars or 3.33 per movie. I have never suggested a bluray over a 4K for any movie before, but I am suggesting that now. Save your money, don't but this for more than 20 dollars.
