good ole' fashion combination lock with the ability to set ...
When I went shopping for a safe last week, I had a few key factors that I considered deal breakers. Floor-bolting without having to drill or modify the safe myself, or voiding the fire warranty when doing so; a non-electronic, good ole' fashion combination lock with the ability to set my own combo, a minimum size, and being both water and fire proof. While some of the big name brands had most of these things, each one I looked at I had to ultimately pass on. Senty, possibly the largest home safe company in America today, had everything I was looking for except they wanted me to drill my own holes, and the combo was fixed. I finally chose this First Alert specifically for the mounting options that are very nice and maintain the fire and water ratings after being properly secured to your floor, but they advertised that the combination is able to be set to your liking. Here is the test from the ad verbatim: "Combination Lock Deters Thieves A combination lock allows you to set your own code for access to the safe. Two emergency override keys are included and store inconspicuously on the safe's exterior, so you can access the safe even if you forget the combination." Having just unpacked the safe, I can tell you that per the manual, this is NOT the case. From the manual: "The combination for your safe can be found on the front of the safe door. It is a pre-set four (4) number sequence that is unique to your safe and CANNOT BE CHANGED." Thanks a lot, First Alert.
