Ivy League Brain......GED Heart.
Anyone who has read or knows anything about emotional intelligence will note that Ms. Chua is a floundering D student in the arena of emotional intelligence. When she says that raising a child with her method is "harder", she is telling an outright lie to the reader and probably to herself. How many people have not felt the urge to smack a young child, because they are making us so angry that the action would make US feel better? Ms. Chua is merely giving in to the instinctive urge to meet frustration with nastiness. It is far harder to become enraged at a child and hold yourself together than to drag a 3-year old out to the porch and leave her there just long enough to stave off Child Services. Ms. Chua's parenting style shows me one thing about her: She lacks emotional control. Don't tell me that her outbursts at her children were not, in most part, meant to make HER feel better. It's like a hundred little revenges everyday. "How dare you anger me by getting a B! I'll show you!". What I find most absurd is that Ms. Chua's method creates the children upon whom, very quickly, the method will no longer work. If you are striving to create an intelligent child, how long will it be until the kid figures out that your praise is nothing more than pandering designed to lure them into another A? How longer until they figure out that mommy's happiness is little more than a dog treat, designed to fool them into studying 30 hours a week?
